I was reminded this week of these wise words from Isak Dinesen, author of Out of Africa and Babette’s Feast. Dinesen is the pen name of Karen Blixen, the Danish author who traveled to Kenya as a young bride, and continued to run a large coffee plantation for 10 years after her divorce in 1921, through a series of challenges and tragedies (that’s right, Out of Africa is nonfiction). I visited the Blixen museum a few years ago, outside of Nairobi, and it seemed a wistful place – and very beautiful, with the rolling green hills a bit like the sea.
Whatever you are remembering this Memorial Day weekend, whether with joy or sorrow, I wish you a bit of salt water – and time outdoors – to help along the way.
